Know The Truth – Am I A True Disciple Of Christ?

This question is easily answered when one appeals to the Word of God. Jesus said, “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.” John 8:31-34. Believers are to “continue in” the teachings (words) of Jesus. Jesus is both Lord and God. John 20:24-29. Can you be a true disciple of Christ and ignore His teachings (words)? A believer in Christ is one who continues in the teachings (words) of Christ.

Jesus said, “The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master… And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.” Luke 6:40, 46-49. A disciple of Christ will become a teacher of the teachings (words) of the Christ. The disciples of Christ become known as Christians. Acts 11:26. Jesus can be your Lord and discipline every area of your personal life by your obedience to His teachings.

Some questions that one should consider. Is a disciple above his teacher? Did Jesus come to bring peace upon the earth? Do people who refuse to listen and obey the teachings of Jesus put themselves above Him? Is it always easy to confess Jesus in the presence of strangers or friends? Jesus said, “The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.” Matthew 10:24. He also said, “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Matthew 10:32-37. Becoming a disciple of Christ will sometimes cause a division in a family.

Jesus said to His apostles, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19. NKJV. For one to become a disciple of Jesus, he or she must obey the teachings (words) of Jesus. Believe – John 8:24; Repent – Acts 2:38; Confession – Acts 8:37; Be baptized (immersed) for the remission of your sins. Acts 2:38; Cf. 22:16.
