Know The Truth – Purpose Of Old Testament And Miracles

What Is The Purpose Of The Old Testament? Even though the Law of  Moses has ended, we can still learn from the Old Testament Scriptures. The Bible says, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” Romans 15:4.  Who / What Are We To Follow Today? In Matthew 17:1-5, God the Father said very clearly “hear ye Him (His Son).” According to Matthew 5:21, 22, 27, 28. the commands of Jesus must be obeyed from the heart.

What Are The Purposes Of Miracles? Much is said about miracles today. Many believe that miracles are still happening today! However, what does the Bible say? The first purpose of the miracles was to prove that Jesus is Deity/God. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” John 1:1-3. “And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 20:30-31. Do you believe in the recorded miracles? Why would John have made a record of these miracles, if Jesus was still performing miracles today?

The second purpose of the miracles was to confirm God’s Word to those who heard. Jesus had given the commission to go into “all the world” and then it is stated by inspiration, “And they [apostles] went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming [present tense] the word with signs following.” Mark 16:15, 20. Some thirty years later the Bible states, “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed [past tense] unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?” Hebrews 2:3-4. The Word of God has been confirmed.

The third purpose of the miracles was to verify a true apostle. Paul wrote, “Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.” 2 Corinthians 12:12. The fourth purpose of the miracles was to fulfill prophecy. The Bible says, “That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” Matthew 8:17.  Does the Bible say that spiritual gifts/miracles would pass away or come to an end? Yes! “Charity [love] never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.” 1 Corinthians 13:8. Did Paul heal every co-worker when one of them was sick? No! “Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletus sick.” 2 Timothy 4:20. Since the miracles were to prove the above four purposes, the purpose and time of miracles were coming to an end in the first century.
